Shopping for Kids Pajamas: Where to Go, What to Look For

Kids pajamas can be bought at many types of stores. Depending on the style and quality you want, however, you may need to shop at a certain store. Once you know what type of pajamas you want to purchase, you can make a decision about where to shop.

Consider the age of your child first as you decide where to buy pajamas. For example, baby sleep wear is very different from toddler pajamas. As babies age, pajamas tend to look more like regular children's pajamas instead of infant pajamas, which can be sleep sacks or zip-up jammies with feet.

Most stores that carry baby sleepwear will carry other types of children's pajamas as well. Look first at the specific section of the store that is appropriate for your child's age. Within the correct age department, look for boys' and girls' sections. Pajamas are generally grouped together, separate from other types of clothing.

Take your child's personality and design preferences into account when you buy pajamas. For example, if you have a tomboy daughter, she would likely not want too many pink, princess-like frills. Kids pajamas come in a variety of colors, designs and themes.

Also think about whether your child is prone to sleeping on top of his blankets and whether he is hot or cold-natured. You might buy footie pajamas for him even if he is four, but he wriggles out of his blankets in the winter time. Some department and general merchandise stores carry footie pajamas for older kids.

Consider the season when you buy pajamas, too. Footie pajamas in July generally won't be too comfortable. Look at the material from which the children's pajamas are made as well. If you have a baby that is allergic to a particular material, you want to avoid infant pajamas that are made from that fabric.

Look at the quality and price of the pajamas you buy. If you end up with toddler pajamas that cost a lot of money but that your child is likely to grow out of soon, it is not a good investment. A nightgown for your daughter that is long is not going to become too short, but pants will quickly become too tight and short by comparison.

Think about safety as you purchase baby sleep wear. Sleep sacks are generally a good idea for younger babies than covering them up with blankets at night, which may increase the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). Sleep sacks let your baby move his feet and arms around freely, but he stays warm enough during the night. You might also look for fire retardant material in your children's pajamas.

Whether you shop in general merchandise stores, department stores, thrift stores or online, you should be able to find pajamas that fit your kids' sense of style and is a good value. Consider safety, quality and style before you go out to buy pajamas. Knowing what you want before you start shopping will make the process quicker and easier.
